چکیده
We present a diffuse-interface treatment of the internal gravity waves which have been observed experimentally by Berg et al. in xenon near its thermodynamic critical point. The results are compared with theoretical predictions by Berg et al. that were obtained using separate models above and below the critical temperature Tc . The diffuse-interface model applies both above and below Tc , and is formulated by using the density as an order parameter. The diffuse interface is represented as a transition zone of rapid but smooth density variation in the model, and density gradients appear in a capillary tensor, or Korteweg stress term, in the momentum equation. We obtain static density profiles, compute internal wave frequencies and compare with the experimental data and theoretical results of Berg et al. both above and below the critical temperature. The results reveal a singularity in the diffuse-interface model in the limit of incompressible perturbations. @S1070-6631~97!03007-9#

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation
In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...
متن کاملCapillary-to-Bulk Crossover of Nonequilibrium Fluctuations in the Free Diffusion of a Near-Critical Binary Liquid Mixture.
We have studied the nonequilibrium fluctuations that occur at the interface between two miscible phases of a near-critical binary mixture during a free-diffusion process. The small-angle static scattered intensity is the superposition of nonequilibrium contributions that are due to capillary waves and to bulk fluctuations. A linearized hydrodynamic description of the fluctuations allows us to i...
متن کاملDiffuse-interface Methods in Fluid Mechanics
We review the development of diffuse-interface models of hydrodynamics and their application to a wide variety of interfacial phenomena. These models have been applied successfully to situations in which the physical phenomena of interest have a length scale commensurate with the thickness of the interfacial region (e.g. near-critical interfacial phenomena or small-scale flows such as those occ...
متن کاملElastic Wave Propagation at Imperfect Boundary of Micropolar Elastic Solid and Fluid Saturated Porous Solid Half-Space
This paper deals with the reflection and transmission of elastic waves from imperfect interface separating a micropolar elastic solid half-space and a fluid saturated porous solid half-space. Longitudinal and transverse waves impinge obliquely at the interface. Amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted waves are obtained and computed numerically for a specific model and results obta...

The present investigation is concerned with the reflection and transmission coefficients of plane waves at the interface of generalized thermoelastic solid half space and heat conducting micropolar fluid half- space. The amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted waves with various angle of incidence have been computed numerically and depicted graphically. Micropolarity and thermal r...
